International Power Adapters & Converters
In the 21st century, we are traveling with more electronic devices than ever before. As a result there is often confusion on how to ensure your devices are going to work overseas while traveling. In general while on a domestic cruise line, leaving from a US port, you’ll likely find a standard 120V 60Hz outlet, just like you have at home. There is usually between 1 to 3 of these in the entire stateroom for your use.
When traveling abroad outside of North America you need to consider how you are going to power or recharge your electronic devices.
Generally there are two types of devices available for purchase:
- Adapters – which simply lets you connect your device into the proper style plug prongs to fit into the wall;
- Converters – which also perform a form of electrical conversion to make your device compatible both electrically and physically with the wall power.
Which one you need depends on the devices you intend to use. And figuring out which one you need takes just a bit of careful evaluation of the “fine print” on your electronic device.
- If the device is single voltage, that is, it says “120v” or “120volts” then you will need a converter
- If the device is multi-voltage, it will typically say something similar to “100-240v” and if so, you can use an adapter
Note that you can always use a converter, even with multi-voltage devices. However, you cannot exchange the other way – single voltage will not work with an adapter. Doing so will risk damaging the device, as well as possible shutting off the power to the room, building, etc… or possibly fire!
Finally, if your using anything with a heater element — be sure to check the “wattage” on the device you plan on using and make sure the adapter or converter is rated for at least that amount.
The best time to purchase them is before you leave home – they are readily available and less expensive than trying to purchase them overseas.
If you live in the Redding area, I highly recommend visiting Zoe’s Travel Shoppe in the Mt Shasta Mall. Otherwise, check out your local Radio Shack or Target.
