Places Americans Can Visit Without a Passport

When I was a child, you could travel many places without a passport. However, the world has changed since then, with even a car trip to Canada requiring a passport. However, there are still some beautiful places you can visit as an American without requiring a US Passport. So if you’re looking for someplace unique to go this summer, consider one of these great destinations!

Each of these destinations have fantastic beaches and water activities. The climate is warm to tropical, and a perfect place to get away for a week. Each also offers a wonderfully diverse cultural experience, most of which boast a national park.

  • Puerto Rico in the Caribbean Sea, west of the US Virgin Islands. Lots of flights from the US daily. Beyond magnificent beaches is rain-forest hikes, and underwater adventures.
  • US Virgin Islands is an unincorporated territory of the United States also in the Caribbean Sea. Like most islands in the Caribbean, there are lots to do in the water, from snorkeling to diving. There is also a national park, Virgin Islands National Park.
  • Northern Mariana Islands is officially the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, a string of 14 islands near the Philippines in the Pacific. The diving here is fantastic with tropical coral reefs and dozens of shipwrecks. You can also explore some of the World War II Bunkers.
  • Guam is a US Territory and is just north of the Mariana Islands.  Flights frequently come from Hawaii. Diving is the highlight of this destination.
  • American Samoa is the unincorporated territory of the US and is a total of 6 islands, mid-way between Hawaii and New Zealand. Lots of beach activities and relaxation can be found here.

And of course, we’d be remiss if we didn’t remind you that you can take cruises to Alaska, Hawaii and the Caribbean without a passport on what are called “closed loop” cruises — where you start and end at the same US Port.
