Winter Storms & Travel Protection
Winter storms not only affect your travel plans when you are coming from, to, or from directly affected states, but it can have a cascading effect on your travel plans. Our agents and clients often experience this when they are flying from San Francisco (SFO) to Redding (RDD) on United — the aircraft often comes form Oregon which can be impacted with winter storms which cascade into the aircraft never arriving in SFO to make the short flight back to Redding… Beyond those, here are some additional examples of things you can be covered for with some travel insurance plans.
If my airport is closed due to a severe winter storm, and my vacation is delayed, can I be reimbursed?
Yes, for a severe winter storm travel insurance can help cover the expenses incurred if your trip is delayed and can cover reasonable, additional travel expenses such as, accommodations, meals, etc., until travel becomes possible.
How can travel insurance cover my vacation investment in the event of severe winter weather?
In the event of a severe winter storm that causes the cancellation or delay of travel at your point of departure, travel insurance provides coverage for the Trip Cancellation and Interruption benefit. If your trip is cancelled for a covered reason, we will refund the pre-paid, forfeited, non-refundable trip costs trip up to the limit of coverage.
How else can travel insurance help me when my flight is cancelled or delayed due to winter storms?
Most insurance plans available through Travel Guard come with valuable assistance services. This means if your flight is delayed or cancelled due to severe winter weather, we will work with the airlines on your behalf to book a new flight and get you where you need to be.
If a severe winter weather warning or watch is issued that may impact my travel plans, up to what point can I still purchase travel insurance?
Insurance must be purchased 24 hours prior to when the severe winter storm warning or watch is issued. Once the severe winter weather warning or watch has been forecast, Trip Cancellation and Interruption losses resulting from the winter storm are excluded from the coverage of the policy.
Certain restrictions apply. Always call your insurance provider as soon as it is safe to do so. They will be able to provide you immediate assistance and provide you various options available to you.
